Aluminum sulfate, commonly known as alum, is used as a flocculant or clarifier in swimming pools. It works by coagulating tiny suspended particles (like dirt and algae) that are too small for the filter to catch, forming larger clumps that can then be filtered out or vacuumed to waste.
When added to pool water, alum creates a positive charge that neutralizes the negative charge of suspended particles. These particles then bind together (flocculate) to form larger, heavier clumps. These clumps either settle to the pool floor or are large enough to be trapped by the filter.
There are two main methods: as a clarifier, you add a small amount continuously to help the filter work better. As a flocculant for severe cloudiness, you add a larger dose, turn the pump off for 8-12 hours to let the particles settle to the floor, then manually vacuum the settled sediment to 'waste,' bypassing the filter.
Alum is generally safe for sand and DE filters. However, caution is needed with cartridge filters. If alum is used as a flocculant and the clumps are not vacuumed to waste but instead pulled into the filter, they can severely clog and ruin a cartridge. For this method, always vacuum to waste.
Alum is acidic and can lower the pH and total alkalinity of your pool water. It's important to test your water after using alum and adjust your pH and alkalinity back to ideal levels (pH 7.4-7.6).
When used as a flocculant (with the pump off), it typically takes 8 to 16 hours for the particles to settle to the bottom. The water above the sediment should become sparkling clear. You then vacuum the sediment to waste.
Once the alum has done its job and the sediment is vacuumed out, and the water chemistry is rebalanced, the pool is safe for swimming. However, you should not swim during the flocculation process, as the water will be very cloudy and the chemicals are actively working.
