A swimming pool pump is the heart of the pool's circulation system. It is an electric motor that creates suction to pull water from the pool through the skimmer(s) and main drain, then pushes it through the filter (and heater/chlorinator) before returning it to the pool via the return jets.
The pump motor spins an impeller inside a housing. The spinning impeller creates a vacuum on the suction side, drawing water in. The water then passes through a strainer basket that catches large debris. The impeller then forces the water out under pressure on the discharge side, sending it to the filter.
The main types are: Single-Speed Pumps (run at one constant speed), Dual-Speed Pumps (have two speed settings), and Variable-Speed Pumps (can run at many different speeds). Variable-speed pumps are the most energy-efficient and are now required by law in many regions.
Pump sizing is based on your pool's volume and the hydraulic characteristics of your plumbing system (pipe size, length, number of fittings). The goal is to turn over the entire pool volume once in an 8-10 hour period. A pool professional should perform a hydraulic analysis to select the correctly sized pump.
Total Dynamic Head (TDH) is a measure of the total resistance the pump must overcome to move water through the system. It includes resistance from pipe friction, fittings, valves, the filter, and the heater. It's a critical factor in pump sizing, as a pump's performance varies with the head it operates against.
Variable-speed pumps are significantly more energy-efficient than single-speed pumps. They allow you to run the pump at lower speeds for routine filtration, which uses much less electricity. They can also be run at higher speeds when needed for tasks like running a cleaner or heating. The energy savings can pay for the higher initial cost in a year or two.
Regularly empty the pump strainer basket to ensure good flow. Keep the pump area clean and well-ventilated. Check for leaks around seals and fittings. Listen for unusual noises that could indicate a bearing issue. Have a professional service the motor periodically.
