Competition pool equipment encompasses all the gear necessary to host sanctioned swimming events. This includes lane lines (with floats and tensioning reels), starting blocks (with integrated speakers and handles), backstroke flags, turn-buckle anchor sets, a false start indicator (rope), and sometimes timing systems and scoreboards.
For events to be officially recognized, the equipment must meet FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation) specifications. This includes details like the dimensions and placement of starting blocks, the length and color of lane lines, the height of backstroke flags, and the specifications for timing systems.
Lane lines serve multiple purposes: they divide the pool into individual lanes, they dampen waves created by swimmers to provide a calmer swimming environment, and their color pattern helps swimmers sight the wall for turns. They are essential for fair and fast racing.
Modern competition starting blocks are typically made from a combination of materials. The base is often a strong, corrosion-resistant metal like stainless steel. The platform itself is made from a textured, non-slip material, often a specialized polymer or fiberglass composite. They also feature adjustable footrests for track starts.
Lane lines are tensioned using a system of cables, winches, or turnbuckles. One end of the lane line is attached to a fixed anchor in the pool wall. The other end is attached to a tensioning device (like a turnbuckle or a ratchet-style reel) that allows officials to tighten the line to the correct tautness, ensuring it stays in place and functions properly.
Backstroke flags are suspended 5 meters from each end of the pool. They serve as a visual reference for backstroke swimmers, alerting them that they are approaching the wall. This allows them to count their strokes and prepare for a turn or the finish without having to turn their head.
A false start indicator is a rope that is dropped into the water across all lanes at the start end of the pool if a false start is called. It is used to stop swimmers who may not have heard the recall signal. It is typically made of a lightweight material that will not injure swimmers.
