Backstroke indicator flags, also commonly known as backstroke flags or simply 'the flags,' are a series of pennant-shaped flags suspended on a line across the width of a swimming pool. They are positioned a standard distance (usually 5 meters) from each end wall.
Their primary purpose is to serve as a visual reference for swimmers doing backstroke. Since backstrokers face upward and cannot see the wall, the flags alert them that they are approaching the end of the pool. This allows them to count their strokes and prepare for their turn or the finish.
According to FINA and most other swimming governing body rules, backstroke flags must be suspended 5 meters (16 feet 5 inches) from each end of the pool.
The flags themselves are typically made of durable, colorful nylon or polyester fabric that can withstand outdoor conditions if necessary. The supporting line is often a sturdy cable or rope, and the supporting poles or wall brackets are usually made of stainless steel or aluminum for corrosion resistance.
FINA rules state that the flags should be suspended at a height of not less than 1.8 meters (about 6 feet) above the water surface. This ensures they are clearly visible to swimmers without interfering with their stroke or being a hazard.
The flags are typically installed by mounting two vertical poles on the pool deck or on the walls at the correct distance from each end. A cable or rope is then strung between the poles, and the flags are attached along its length. The system must be sturdy and taut.
While they are essential for backstroke, they can also be a useful visual cue for swimmers of other strokes, especially in open water or unfamiliar pools, to help them judge their distance to the wall. However, their official and primary function is for backstroke.
