A swimming pool skimmer is an essential component of a pool's circulation system. It is a basin built into the pool wall at the waterline, connected to the pump. Its primary job is to continuously draw water from the surface, removing floating debris like leaves, insects, and oils before they sink to the bottom.
Water from the pool surface flows into the skimmer through a floating weir (a hinged flap). The weir prevents debris from floating back out. Inside the skimmer, a removable basket catches leaves and large debris, while the water continues through the suction line to the pump and filter for finer cleaning.
The main parts include: the skimmer body (the basin), the weir (the floating flap), the debris basket, the skimmer lid (on the pool deck), and the throat opening (the rectangular opening in the pool wall). There are also often equalizer and vacuum ports.
You should check and empty your skimmer basket at least once a week, and more often during heavy debris season (like fall). A full basket restricts water flow, making your pump work harder and reducing the skimmer's and filter's efficiency.
Several issues could be the cause: a full or clogged skimmer basket, a stuck weir, the water level is too low (should be halfway up the skimmer opening), or the pump may not be providing enough suction due to a clogged pump strainer or dirty filter.
Yes, most skimmers have a dedicated vacuum port or allow you to attach a vacuum hose directly to the skimmer (after removing the basket). This uses the pool pump's suction to pull the vacuum head and hose, cleaning the pool floor.
The equalizer line is a safety feature. It's a pipe that connects the bottom of the skimmer to a wall fitting or the main drain. If the water level drops below the skimmer's mouth, the pump will draw water from the equalizer line instead of sucking air (which could burn out the pump), preventing airlock.
