A standard swimming pool skimmer refers to the most common type of skimmer used in residential concrete, gunite, and vinyl liner pools. It is a rectangular or square-shaped unit installed in the pool wall at the waterline, with a removable basket and a weir.
While dimensions can vary slightly by brand, a very common standard skimmer size has a faceplate opening of about 6.5 to 7 inches high and 11 to 12 inches wide. The overall body is designed to fit between standard wall studs in pool construction.
Standard skimmers are primarily designed for concrete/gunite and vinyl liner pools. Fiberglass pools often have pre-molded skimmers integrated into the shell. For other pool types, the appropriate skimmer model must be selected.
A general rule of thumb is one skimmer per 500 square feet of pool surface area. Most residential pools function well with one skimmer, but larger pools or those with unusual shapes or heavy debris loads may benefit from two skimmers for better surface cleaning.
Standard skimmer baskets are almost always made of durable plastic, typically polyethylene or polypropylene, which is resistant to pool chemicals and UV rays. They have a handle for easy removal and emptying.
Replacement is very simple. Just lift the old basket out of the skimmer body and drop the new one in. It's important to get a basket that is compatible with your specific skimmer model to ensure a proper fit.
The gasket, usually made of rubber or foam, sits between the skimmer faceplate and the pool wall (or vinyl liner). Its purpose is to create a watertight seal, preventing pool water from leaking out behind the wall or behind the liner.
