A false start indicator, also known as a recall rope, is a safety and fairness device used in competitive swimming. It is a rope suspended across the pool, typically about 15 meters (for backstroke) or 20-25 meters (for freestyle) from the starting end, that can be quickly dropped into the water to stop swimmers if a false start is called.
The rope is held taut above the water surface by a mechanism at the side of the pool. When the starter or referee activates it (usually by pressing a button), the mechanism releases the rope, allowing it to fall into the water across all lanes. This creates a physical barrier that swimmers must stop at.
In a race, if a false start occurs, an audible recall signal (like a series of tones) is sounded. However, swimmers underwater or those wearing earplugs might not hear it. The false start rope provides a clear, unmistakable visual and physical signal for all swimmers to stop, preventing them from continuing the race unfairly or unsafely.
The rope is typically made of a lightweight, non-abrasive material that will not injure swimmers, such as polypropylene or polyethylene. The release mechanisms at the pool sides are usually made of stainless steel or heavy-duty plastic for durability and corrosion resistance.
For backstroke events, the rope is positioned 15 meters from the starting end. For freestyle, butterfly, and breaststroke, it is typically positioned 20 or 25 meters from the start, depending on the governing body's rules and the pool length (often 20m for a 50m pool, 15m for a 25m pool).
The system is installed on the pool deck or sometimes on the pool walls. It requires mounting the release mechanisms securely at the correct distance from the start end, on both sides of the pool. The rope is then threaded through the mechanisms and connected to a control system.
Yes, it is used for all competitive strokes. The distance from the start may be adjusted according to the stroke being swum, but the device itself is the same. For backstroke, the flags are also used as a visual indicator, but the false start rope serves the recall function.
