An artificial resuscitator, commonly known as a bag valve mask (BVM) or Ambu bag, is a handheld device used to provide positive pressure ventilation to a person who is not breathing or is breathing inadequately. It is a critical piece of life-saving equipment.
A BVM consists of a self-inflating bag, a one-way valve, and a face mask. The rescuer places the mask over the victim's mouth and nose, creates a seal, and then squeezes the bag. This forces air (or oxygen, if connected) into the victim's lungs. The bag self-inflates for the next breath.
