Copper sulphate pentahydrate is primarily used as an effective algaecide in swimming pools. It is particularly good at preventing and treating stubborn algae outbreaks, including 'black algae' which can be resistant to chlorine alone.
Copper ions are toxic to algae. When copper sulphate is added to pool water, it releases copper ions that disrupt the algae's cellular processes, effectively killing it and preventing its growth.
The main risk is staining. If copper levels get too high (above 0.2-0.3 ppm), it can cause blue-green or black stains on pool surfaces, especially in plaster or concrete pools. It can also turn blonde hair green. It must be used with extreme care and precise dosing.
First, test your water for existing copper levels. Ideally, they should be zero. Pre-dissolve the required amount (based on your pool volume and manufacturer's instructions) in a bucket of water. With the pump running, pour the solution slowly around the pool's perimeter, avoiding direct contact with pool surfaces. Brush the pool walls and floor afterward.
It is most commonly used in concrete/gunite pools. It is generally not recommended for vinyl liner or fiberglass pools because of the high risk of staining, which can be permanent on these softer surfaces.
Removing copper stains can be difficult. It often involves lowering the water level and using a specialized stain-removing chemical, or in severe cases, acid washing the pool surface. Prevention through careful use is always the best approach.
No, copper sulphate is an algaecide, not a sanitizer. It helps control algae but does not kill bacteria and other pathogens. You must continue to use a primary sanitizer like chlorine to keep the water safe and hygienic.
