A pool heat pump is an electrically powered device that heats pool water by transferring heat from the outside air to the water. It works like an air conditioner in reverse, using a refrigeration cycle to capture ambient heat and deliver it to the pool water circulating through the unit.
A fan draws in outside air, which passes over an evaporator coil containing a refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs the heat from the air and turns into a gas. A compressor then pressurizes the gas, making it very hot. This hot gas passes through a condenser coil, where the pool water flowing through the coil absorbs the heat. The heated water is then returned to the pool.
Heat pumps are extremely energy-efficient, often with a COP of 5-6. They are cheaper to operate than gas heaters, environmentally friendly (no direct emissions), and provide consistent, gentle heating. They also work as a dehumidifier for indoor pools.
They have a higher upfront cost than gas heaters. They are slower to heat the pool, especially from a cold start, and their efficiency drops as the outside air temperature falls (typically below 50°F). They require a significant amount of electricity to run.
Sizing is based on your pool's surface area, not volume. A professional will calculate the required BTUs/kW based on your pool size, desired temperature, average air temperature, and desired heating speed. An undersized unit will struggle to maintain temperature.
Operating costs vary based on local electricity rates, pool size, desired temperature, and climate. However, because of their high efficiency, they are generally much cheaper to run than gas heaters. A pool cover can significantly reduce these costs.
Maintenance is relatively simple. Regularly clean or replace the air filter. Keep the area around the unit clear of debris to ensure good airflow. Occasionally check and clean the evaporator and condenser coils. Have a professional inspect the refrigerant levels and compressor annually.
