A swimming pool vacuum head is the part of a manual pool cleaning system that travels across the pool floor, sucking up dirt, leaves, and debris. It attaches to a telescopic pole and a vacuum hose, which connects to the pool's suction source (skimmer or dedicated vacuum line).
There are two main types: standard vacuum heads and weighted vacuum heads. Standard heads are lighter and may float slightly, while weighted heads are heavier to stay firmly on the pool floor for better debris pickup. They also come with different types of wheels or rollers for different pool surfaces.
The most important factor is your pool surface. For concrete/gunite pools, a head with metal wheels is common. For vinyl liner and fiberglass pools, you must use a head with soft, non-marring wheels or rollers to prevent scratching. The width of the head is also a choice; wider heads cover more area faster.
You attach the vacuum head to the pole and the hose. The other end of the hose connects to the suction source (e.g., a skimmer plate). When the pump is on, suction is created at the head. You then guide the head across the pool floor, and debris is pulled through the head, up the hose, and into the pump's strainer basket or the filter.
A vacuum head is the part that moves on the pool floor. A vacuum plate (or skimmer plate) is a cover that fits over the skimmer basket, with a hole for attaching the vacuum hose. It directs suction from the skimmer to the hose.
Rinse the head with fresh water after use. Check the wheels or rollers for debris that might be stuck, which could scratch the pool surface. Inspect the attachment points for wear. Store it in a dry place when not in use.
Most vacuum heads are designed with a standard female socket that accepts a standard tapered telescopic pool pole. As long as you have a standard pole, the connection should be universal.
