A side-mount pool sand filter is a type of sand filter where the multiport control valve is mounted on the side of the filter tank. This is in contrast to top-mount filters where the valve is on top. The valve is used to control the filter's functions: filter, backwash, rinse, waste, recirculate, and closed.
Side-mount filters are often easier to service because the valve is at a more accessible height, especially if the filter is installed in a tight equipment area. They also tend to have a lower overall height profile, which can be beneficial in spaces with low headroom.
To backwash, first turn off the pump. Then, rotate the side-mount valve handle to the 'Backwash' position. Turn the pump on and let it run until the water in the sight glass runs clear (usually 2-3 minutes). Turn the pump off, move the valve to 'Rinse', run for about 30 seconds, then turn off the pump and return the valve to 'Filter'.
Neither is inherently 'better'. The choice often comes down to personal preference and installation logistics. Side-mount valves are considered by some to be easier to repair or replace parts on, while top-mount valves offer a more compact, all-in-one unit.
You should use #20 silica sand specifically graded for pool filters, with a grain size of 0.45-0.55 mm. Do not use play sand or construction sand, as it is the wrong size and can damage the filter's internal components.
The required amount of sand varies based on the filter's diameter. Consult your filter's manual for the exact capacity. It is crucial not to overfill or underfill. The sand level should typically be about halfway up the filter tank.
Yes, many modern side-mount sand filters are compatible with alternative filter media like recycled glass. Glass media can filter finer particles and may last longer than traditional sand, but check your filter's warranty and specifications first.
