A top-mount pool sand filter is a sand filter system where the multiport control valve is mounted directly onto the top of the filter tank. This creates a compact, integrated unit. The valve controls all functions like filtering, backwashing, and rinsing.
The main benefits are its compact, space-saving design and ease of installation. With the valve integrated on top, it requires less footprint than a side-mount system with plumbing running to a separate valve. It's a popular choice for residential pools.
The process is standard for sand filters. Turn off the pump, move the top-mount valve handle to the 'Backwash' position, turn the pump on, and watch the sight glass. Once the water runs clear, turn the pump off, set the valve to 'Rinse', run briefly, then turn off the pump and return the valve to 'Filter'.
This often indicates pressure on the valve gasket. Always ensure the pump is turned off before attempting to turn the handle. If it's still stiff, the large o-ring or gasket inside the valve may need lubrication or replacement.
Pool filter sand typically needs to be changed every 5-7 years. Over time, the sand becomes 'channeled' or worn smooth, reducing its ability to trap particles effectively. You might need to change it sooner if it becomes clogged with oils or calcium.
No, you cannot. A sand filter is specifically designed for sand (or approved alternatives like glass media). Using DE powder in a sand filter would blow through the system and likely clog your pool. The internal components are different.
Cloudy water can be caused by several factors: the sand is old and needs replacing, the water chemistry is imbalanced (high pH or alkalinity), the filter is undersized for the pump, or there is a problem with the multiport valve allowing water to bypass the sand.
