A suction nozzle is a fitting connected to the suction side of the pool pump, meaning it pulls water out of the pool. The most common examples are the main drain(s) on the pool floor and dedicated vacuum line ports in the wall. They are designed to safely draw water for filtration.
A suction nozzle is part of the inlet plumbing that carries water away from the pool to the pump and filter. A return nozzle (or inlet) is part of the outlet plumbing that brings filtered water back into the pool. One is 'sucking' water out, the other is 'blowing' water in.
They can be if not properly designed and maintained. The suction from a main drain can create enough force to entrap a swimmer, especially children.
